The Ends. The Means.

“The Ends. The Means”

written to Grow till tall by Jonsi

“He thought for months on how he would do it. And he did it all because he loved her, not because he wanted to promote the ring business.”

Our industry has lost it’s way. Like a gong during a nap my work is continually interrupted by talk of “the Ends”. Getting publishes, making lot’s of money, where we will be in a year, likes on facebook, followings, workshops, 10 easy steps, having the big idea and being first. Terms like leader, expert and rock star are so coveted that we keep lowering the standard. What happened? When did pursuit of “the Ends” suck all of the joy out of “the Means”

“The Means” are where the memories are.

It’s where the care and the thought and the dedication go. The End is only a moment, the Means are….everything else. When I look at my children who are growing faster than I can handle, I long for the Means of raising them. The little moments that add up to a life together. I don’t want the Ends to come.

Often times our industry has no problem capturing the Means of others to achieve our own Ends. How dare we. How dare we take those moments for ourselves. They aren’t ours.

As we race to our “Ends”, we seek out what others are doing, and so begins the sale of shortcuts. These shortcuts are the “steroids” of our industry. An excuse for not putting the time in. For not putting the work in. But a funny thing happens when we all take the same shortcuts to reach the same ends.

It happens.

These shortcuts and intellectual inbreeding lead us all to the same place in the same way. And the less traveled road becomes a highway….and repeat.
I’m not trying to get you down or build myself up because I’ve done it. For years. But I’ll tell you this, I’m done.

As time goes on I am seeking the Means. With H.H. Boogie how, with what, by whom and why our products are made matter. There will be times that we can do better and I hope you will help us do so. I want to see a day where photographers begin to take the long way. To realize that the Means make up what we do and that every part is important. Not to take all of the nutrition out for the sake of taste. Not to look past our clients and to take their story for our own Ends. Not just to be people of great passion but of great conviction.

Not only things because we love, but with love.

Living in the moment is a challenge. It means accepting our shortcomings and weaknesses. It’s much easier to imagine and plan for a perfect future. Of course that means missing out on so much. I’ve learned that you can’t skip ahead. There are no shortcuts. Thank you for this reminder to focus on this moment and on my art not on what my art may or may not bring me.

I needed to read this tonight as I prepare to shoot my first of many weddings in 2014. It’s so easy to get caught up in the blogs and likes and all that. This was a great reminder of why we do what we do. Thanks, Jeremy.
